The Best Drop-In Gym and Fitness Options in North York and Scarborough

Published 2026-08-29 by the GetMovingTO team.

Downtown gets all the rec centre attention, but if you live in North York or Scarborough you are sitting on some of the best-equipped drop-in facilities in the city, and they are less crowded than the downtown ones because nobody writes about them.

This is a rundown of the ones actually worth your time if what you want is weights, cardio, or a gym floor, based on what is actually scheduled at each centre week to week.

North York

North Toronto Memorial Community Centre, near Yonge and Eglinton, is the workhorse: lane swim, a weight and cardio room, yoga and an indoor walking track in one building, with close to 750 sessions a week running through it. If you live midtown it is the default answer.

Edithvale Community Centre, up near Yonge and Finch, pairs a weight and cardio room with yoga, Zumba and an indoor track. It is one of the busiest centres in the district and the schedule shows it.

Ethennonnhawahstihnen' Community Recreation Centre and Library, by Bessarion station, is the biggest facility in North York by session count, over 800 a week, with a pool running lane swim and aquafit alongside the gym programming. And for a pure weight room plus track combo, Parkway Forest, Dennis R. Timbrell, Antibes and Mitchell Field all run weight and cardio rooms with walking tracks, spread nicely across the district so one of them is usually close.

Scarborough

Don Montgomery Community Recreation Centre, at Eglinton and Midland, is the all-rounder: basketball, badminton, snooker, and one of the city's better drop-in skating lineups, including older adult shinny. It is the closest thing Scarborough has to a do-everything centre.

Centennial Recreation Centre on Ellesmere is the aquatic anchor, shallow and deep aquafit, lane swim, leisure swim, plus adult leisure skate on the arena side. Birchmount Community Centre adds lane swim and pickleball to the east end mix, and Rouge Valley Community Recreation Centre, way out by the zoo, runs a walking track and lane swim for the eastern edge of the city.

How to use this

Do not pick by reputation, pick by the trip. The best centre is the one under twenty minutes from your door, because that is the one you will still be going to in February.

Check the live schedule before your first visit, weight room hours and open gym slots shift week to week. Search GetMovingTO with your home address and then your work or school address, you would be surprised how often the better option is the second one.

The short version

North York: North Toronto Memorial, Edithvale, and Ethennonnhawahstihnen' carry the district. Scarborough: Don Montgomery and Centennial, with Birchmount and Rouge Valley covering the east. All of it is drop-in, all of it is a few dollars or free, and none of it requires a contract.
